چکیده

Remark: Economist’s Heuristics for the Neyman-Pearson Lemma Cosma Shalizi of Carnegie Mellon has suggested the following nice heuristic argument for the optimality of likelihood ratio tests. We want to choose a rejection region, R such that under the alternative hypothesis, the probability of falling into R, which we will denote, Q(R) is as large as possible, given that we satisfy a constraint that the probability falling into R under the null hypothesis, denoted by P (R) doesn’t exceed some specified level α. Then Lagrange tells us to solve, max{Q(R)− λ(P (R)− α}

Asymptotic Relative Efficiency of Tests : ARE on a G String

In this lecture I want delve a bit more deeply into the problem of comparing performance of various tests. Among other things I will try to provide an exposition of Chernoff’s (1952) result employed in Lars Hansen’s talks here several years ago. The lecture is based on van der Vaart (1998, Chapter 14). Consider the problem of testing H0 : θ ∈ Θ0 vs H1 : θ ∈ Θ1, using a test statistic Tn that re...

Economics 508 Lecture 7 Introduction to Specification Testing in Dynamic

In this lecture I want to briefly describe some techniques for evaluating dynamic econometric models like the models for gasoline demand you have been estimating. Until now, we have implicitly assumed that these models satisfied the classical assumptions of the Gaussian linear model. In particular, we have assumed that the error sequences {ut} were iid and approximately Gaussian, thus justifyin...

Testing for homogeneity in mixture models

Statistical models of unobserved heterogeneity are typically formalized as mixtures of simple parametric models and interest naturally focuses on testing for homogeneity versus general mixture alternatives. Many tests of this type can be interpreted as C(α) tests, as in Neyman (1959), and shown to be locally, asymptotically optimal. A unified approach to analysing the asymptotic behavior of suc...
